Myitkyina
MYITKYINA
is the capital of Kachin State in the north of the
country. It is 919 miles from Yangon and 487 miles
from Mandalay. It is a pleasant town situated on a
broad valley surrounded by hills. This town is
situated on the southern flank of Kachin State. Myit-son,
the confluence of the Mekha and Malika Rivers, 45km
north of town, forms the beginning of the great
Ayeyarwaddy River. It is one of Myanmar's beautiful
and important natural beauty spots. The unspoiled
panoramic view from Myit-son is one of the tourists’
attractions. The water there is also crystal clear.
Some ethnic Kachin tribes can also be seen around
Myitkyina. Indawgyi Lake is a night stop tour and
Waingmaw is a day tour from Myitkyina. Hsu Taung
Pyit Zeditaw is a pretty, gilded, ‘wish-fulfilling’
stupa on the banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River. The
larger Andawshin Paya boasts a silver-plated zedi
said to contain tooth relics and a Buddha footprint;
there are a couple of adjacent monasteries. The area
just became recently accessible to tourists and
invites travellers to enter the jade mining centre
of Pakkan and the huge Indawgyi Lake. The most
popular souvenir among visitors is the dark indigo
and green Kachin longyi.
